Our Research Emphases

Our Research Foci Breakdown
Clouds
A cloud is a visible mass of miniature liquid droplets, ice crystals, or other particles, suspended in the atmosphere of a planetary body or similar space. Water or various other chemicals may compose the droplets and crystals. We seek to understand the kinetics and thermodynamics of cloud formation processes in the atmosphere.

Aerosols
Aerosols are tiny (solid or liquid) particles suspended in the air, which can be natural (like sea spray and mineral dust) or human-caused (like coal fly ash and others). They have significant impacts on Earth’s climate by reflecting or absorbing sunlight, influence weather patterns, and can affect human health.
Ice Nucleation
We explore the processes where liquid water transforms into ice by forming a stable or metastable ice crystal, and it is initiated either spontaneously (homogeneous freezing) or by a surface or particle (heterogeneous nucleation). This phenomenon is crucial for cloud formation, cryopreservation, water security, energy, and prevention of ice buildup on surfaces.

Areas Impacted by Atmospheric Aerosols

These aerosol studies impact weather by affecting cloud formation, brightness, and precipitation, and impact human health by causing respiratory and cardiovascular problems due to air pollution.
Our Research Approach
We follow a tripartite approach in our research. This enables us to look at complex problems from different angles. In the laboratory, we explore the scientific concepts to understand the fundamental principles. In the field, we test out and measure in a natural environment. By using modelling, we are able to explore capabilities that ordinarily wouldn’t be possible with traditional laboratory experiments. With this approach, we open up collaborations with experts in our research community and explore research without limits.
